William Eaton

In the footsteps of Montaigne

Accused of trying to revive old forms: the intellectual essay and philosophical dialogue. Praised as a "joyful skeptic" (UTNE Reader) and for combining “the compelling truth of documentary with the grace of romantic fiction” (Manuel Puig).

For the past several years has focused on short essays (see montaigbakhtinian.com) and longer scholarly pieces, and on creating fictional, intellectual dialogues in which characters speak both not only about their ideas, but also feelings and experiences underlying these ideas. Also serving as Editorial Adviser to and Executive Editor of Zeteo: The Journal of Interdisciplinary Writing, a publication of the Graduate Center of the City University of New York (CUNY).

In youth, was an award-winning journalist in the “alternative” (leftwing) press and a fiction writer. Received an MFA from Columbia, Algonquin Books published the novel (Knute, and Knute Again), and an English organization once nominated William “erotic writer of the year”. Bilingual (English, French). Long earned a decent living as a linguist.

Now lives in a corner of New York City with his son, who has a habit of creeping into his writing, though hardly with the alacrity with which he has captured William's heart.
